Daniel did lose his humanity. Hate. Alone in is his emptiness. Is Daniel evil? If so, is Daniel evil the entire movie, or merely evil at the end? To me, he had underlying darkness or disturbed aspects the entire movie -- but that not always completely clear or necessarily consistent. I will say when he started killing people, and the way he shit on his son H.W. in the end, then his darkness more rose to the surface. A disappointment.
