What an adventure! Shane (1953) sits at #45 on the AFI list! A movie I knew nothing about, and am interested to hear your thoughts on this one. A wonderful message is what I am left with after watching this film, along with an amazing on-location setting that brought stunning visuals.

It's really hard to believe this movie is so high up on the AFI list. There are lots of much better Westerns — along with plenty of every other genre — that could be honored instead. Yes, the outdoor scenery at Jackson Hole is lovely, but the acting is wooden, the direction is plodding, and that overbearing musical score drives me nuts. I think this is the third (or maybe fourth) time I've watched this all the way through, always hoping that maybe I'll see what makes "Shane" so popular. And every time I'm disappointed.

2025-09-06 18:58:21 +0000 UTCThis is a rare occasion where I watched a reaction for a film I had never seen before. I'd heard about Shane since I was a kid but never took the time to watch it. I can definitely see the influence this had on future Westerns, particularly Pale Rider with Clint Eastwood. Beautiful landscapes and endearing characters just trying to raise their families in peace made this a pleasure to watch, and the final scene with Shane and Joey was very special. Great reaction Ames!
