Midnight Cowboy (1969) watch along

Spoilers Below

#43 on the AFI list! Was this all a dream? ha! I loved Midnight Cowboy for its cinematography; the gritty streets showcase NYC's raw, haunting beauty. The acting was, of course, incredible! Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight delivered performances so authentic they felt so raw, pulling me into their world of desperation and fleeting hope. The film hit me viscerally; its emotional weight sat with me long after. Its super-tragic narrative broke my heart, yet I was captivated by the introspection it demanded, forcing me to wrestle with the characters' dreams and delusions. The meaning and symbolism woven throughout the film, with its grimy urban decay mirroring broken souls and the fleeting promise of a better life, kept me pondering. Was Rizzo real? I don’t know, and that ambiguity only deepened my obsession with the film’s layered truths. What an interesting friendship that unfolded. I'm mostly left with feelings split between hopeful and tragic with this film.

I've always found the harmonica piece to be haunting as well. It is very beautiful and evokes a profound sense of sadness and longing. The unlikely symbiosis and friendship that develops between the two starkly different main characters is deeply fascinating. The bus driver asking Joe Buck if Ratso was kin to him is like a recognition of what had become a familial bond between the two. Joe's expression while putting his arm around his deceased friend at the end of the film is that of a man who has lost his brother. Thanks for reacting to this one Ames!

Loved your analysis of the "I'm walking here!" line and how he uses that moment to instinctively express something about his character. Really great post-movie thoughts on this one. Fantastic reaction, actually ENHANCED the movie, if such a thing was possible!
