The Abyss (1989) was a stellar runner-up winner in the polls, and it’s no surprise why!! Seems like it's such a beloved sci-fi gem and a new one on my list!

James Cameron’s vision really shines here, seemingly pushing the boundaries of filmmaking, especially in the late 80s, with these groundbreaking visual effects and filming techniques. Not sure how much of the Alien CGI was restored? But loved it, along with all the water filming elements. I feel like I wish I had seen this before Titanic, but I loved seeing all his work in this, contributing to the monstrosity of that film. This movie and its innovation are truly mind-blowing for its time! I was so claustrophobic in this underwater environment, yet awe-inspired! The atmosphere and tone of the film blend real tension with otherworldly wonder, much like Contact’s mix of science and existential discovery. Cameron’s knack for innovation makes every frame feel fresh and immersive, and makes him one of the Giants in filmmaking.
I loved the sci-fi elements, especially the breathing water...stuff... you'll have a laugh at me while watching this... I loved exploring themes of human connection, redemption and the unknown. The alien encounter is handled with a sense of mystery, making it a love letter to the genre’s potential for hope and exploration. It’s the kind of story that sparks the imagination of what first contact would be like.
The acting, to me, is another standout. Ed Harris was outstanding and delivered a raw and intense performance as Bud, anchoring the emotional core of the film, while Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio’s Lindsey brings fierce intelligence and heart. I'll never forget the scene where they are saying goodbye and then bringing her back to life. FML. I friggen loved them together. Their chemistry grounds the high-stakes sci-fi in real human drama. I cared about them and loved the love story in this film. The supporting cast, including Michael Biehn, adds grit and personality and rounds out the film.
Thanks for getting this film into my psyche! I loved it!
