This was the first "mockumentary" (predating The Office, etc.). It is said that the original rough cut was over 4 hours long. Christopher Guest (who is married to Jamie Lee Curtis) would go on to continue making mockumentaries, with "Best in Show", "A Mighty Wind", "Waiting for Guffman", etc. There is a new Spinal Tap sequel.
