I think because Thorfinn hid in the ship and was later on held hostage he feels responsible for bis fathers death. Maybe that is why he is going against the teachings of is father. How can he face his mother and sister? A child on it's own wouldn't know that his family would forgive him and just want him to be back, safe at home, without experience that. Instead the boy ist growing amoung those monsters Up. No wonder he is ended up beeing a revengeful teenager whose partake in pillaging and murder. Sorry for my bad english ✌🏾

2020-02-10 03:11:18 +0000 UTCPeople could barely read or write in this time period so Askeladd knowing about the history of the Saxons or the Roman Empire is very interesting and not something he would typically know anything about. Some subtle hints at more depth to Askeladd's character. Even in the way he was talking to Thorfinn was like a philosophical lesson on the cyclical nature of human civilisation and how no one can escape change (in contrast to Thorfinn who is resisting 'change' and won't let go of his revenge preventing him from moving forward). Not how we've seen Askeladd interacting with other characters or how he interacts with his men. Subtle but good characterisation.
