When Canute asked Askeladd why he doesn't try to become king it's because since he's a descendant of Artorious, had the Anglo-Saxons and Danes not conquered England, he would’ve potentially been king. So Canute was probably wondering why he doesn't try to use his wits and skills to make use of that heritage. But Askeladd obviously doesn't wanna become king because he doesn't believe he's fit for the role since he sees himself as a viking just like all the ones he hates so much. On this quest Askeladd has gone on to find the true king to change the world he's become the very thing he despised in the first place. Which is one thing I love about Askeladd, he's obviously different from a lot of the other vikings we see in the series but he doesn't act above them or act like he's different because of his intelligence or his heritage. He hates vikings and the Danes but he hates himself just as much if not more because he's both of those things. At least with Canute despite being danish he sees something in him that he believes is what is needed of a true king. Now that you know about his main motivation as a character it's kinda easy to see now why Askeladd was most likely being serious when he asked Thors to be their leader since Thors was the exact type of person Askeladd had been searching for, just like how he later found Canute.

Askeladd could become king. If your smart enough anyone can become king especially in a society where warriors follow the strongest warriors. They are Vikings I'm sure they can be convinced someone of none royal blood can rule if they prove themself. It won't be easy but Askeladd is good enough to pull it off with a rebellion or something that's why the prince asked him that after realizing how good Askeladd really is.

Askeladd, in my opinion, has a true neutral alignment. He doesn't follow a moral code really he just does what it takes to achieve his goal and can be charitable when he can afford it. I like shows like this because characters are separated by good or bad they are just characters and everyone can have their own opinions on them and their alignment just like real life.

It's just a matter of implication. It can mean "I'm fine (with that)" or "I'm fine (it's enough)"

Askeladd is such a fascinating character. Like Bjorn said he hates the Danes but also hates himself just as much as he doesn't see himself as any better than the Danes. That's why he isn't suitable to be the King/hero. It also plays in so nicely with the religious themes, particularly the idea of Original Sin that Canute was talking about a few episodes ago. For Askeladd his original sin is the murder of his father that he can never escape. It makes him just as bad as any other Dane and in his mind "doomed his soul" or tainted him which is why he can never become the hero as, in his words, he is just a Viking.
