Dragon Ball - Sub/Dub? Rest in Peace, Akira Toriyama

I already said some thoughts yesterday (in my intro to Frieren ep26 reaction, right after I heard about his passing), but I will just recap some things for the purpose of this post here.

A few weeks ago, during a Twitch stream, I spoke to the live chat about wanting to start any Kind of shonen show, preferably a long one, since I really miss my "One Piece days" (when I could watch 4 - 6 episodes every week). I was hesitant to jump into something very long, so I also took shorter recommendations and mulled it over.

I was the one who brought up Dragon Ball, since it is sort of a nostalgic show for me. I haven't seen it, but DBZ aired on the same TV channel as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, Mew Mew Power and a few other shows I loved to watch. I saw a few episodes and heard lots of boys in school talk about it, but it aired at an odd time so I never really got to watch it.

Anyway, after mulling it over, I decided that (even though it would be another long journey) I am going to add Dragon Ball to my schedule. This was at least 2 weeks ago and I had been very excited to start it this weekend.

I was heartbroken to hear about the author's passing. It felt very sudden, as I don't think anyone knew that he was sick (besides those in his immediate circle, of course). He was working on so many projects, I don't think anyone expected this.

His work influenced so much and so many people, it's almost daunting to start watching at this time, but I shared my thoughts about it on Twitter and it seems like his fans feel it would be like a celebration of his work for anyone who hasn't seen the show to start watching. So I decided to stick to my schedule and start watching tomorrow, as I had planned.

Interesting side note: I initially had it scheduled for my Friday stream and was going to watch 4 episodes of Dragon Ball before reacting to Frieren. However, due to the internet failure on Wednesday (roadworks interfered with some fiber cables) and electricity issues (caused by weather) on Thursday, I had to move some things around.

So tomorrowI will start watching Dragon Ball. It is one of the very few series I would consider watching in English, but I want to hear some feedback. Long term, which would be better? You can give some short opinions about why, but please keep it hint/spoiler free.

Thank you. I am excited to finally see this legendary show that Toriyama-sensei will forever be remembered for.

The dub completely changes the context and characters in certain scenes. I grew up watching and love the dub but your first time watching in my opinion should be the original subbed experience.

Besides the fact that as a non native english speaker i cringe very hard with english dubs its also that some of the Dialoges are often censored also gokus original va is iconic and another main character has the same va as luffy

Uwe

for me I grew up on my own language dub but still i think sub is would be perfect but its up to what you prefer and make you enjoy it more

HunterTariq

I grew up on dub and i love it but honestly sub is the way for the long run as music in dub was amazing growing up but having rewatching it in sub the sub had better music overall

Prefer Dub, Sub does have better VAs and lines as well with different OSTs, though I do prefer the dubs OST. I am American and grew up with the Dubs’ OSTs and VAs so there is a nostalgia bias as well as a cultural bias towards the style of OST in the Dub. The biggest difference for me was the high pitched voices of the protagonists in the Sub. I couldn’t get over it for this anime purely based on how much screaming there is when powering up, special moves, etc. I am a guy as well so I do just like how badass and hype the dubbed VAs sounded when doing the aforementioned screaming.

ive always loved the faulconer version of z but i doubt she would watch that so watching the other versions should be interesting

Dub is great and a classic

DUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VA is far better in japanese(especially in the first series since the VA for kid Goku is garbage compared to the Japanese one). Japanese intro songs are by far the best. The english dub(which was the first one I saw b4 going to the original) has some good moments and very good OST, but even then, after I watched the jap VA I never returned to dub. If you really wanted I would suggest first watching it entirely in japanese and then some moments in english if you are curious. Also, if they continue the anime in any way, you are "forced" to watch sub since the dub comes a long way after that. P.S. Japanese VA Frieza is the ONLY Frieza!

I know some would prefer dub over sub but i think it's nostalgia talking sadly Sub is much much better

Both options seem fine, but i recommend sub, you may recognize a few familiar voices from One Piece. I think most fans of the series have seen Dragon Ball Super with the japanese voices since we wanted to watch the show when it first came out, so i think most people are at least familiar with the japanese voices. I'm not american, so i am not very familiar with the english dub, but what i have heard of it also sounds good.

for me the sub version is 100 times better than the dub but if you choose the dub version it would suit me but the most important for me if you choose the dub takes with the original ost and not the American version it completely changes the feeling of certain iconic scene

sangoukou19 .

The dub is one of the best there ever was, of course the original actors are great in their roles but I always champion and want to celebrate something I find so rarely in anime

Figgerson

Dragon Ball(Z) definitely has one of, if not the most popular english dub of any anime. It is absolutely iconic. I don't think you would regret it at all.

Nik Jovan

I will personally suggest the sub, mainly because i love it so much and so many amazing VAs that we know and love today started with DB or it was their big break. I grew up with the dub but finding out how much the dub changed characters made me dislike it a little bit but the VAs themselves are great and iconic of course. Whichever way you go i'll still watch it of course but i do vote for sub especially long term.

I grew up watching Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in eng dub and I enjoyed it. But later on when I grew order and anime was easier to get access through the internet. I rewatch it in Jap dub with eng sub. I enjoyed it even more. To me the music they used in the Jap dub was better also the voice acting was better in my opinion. But whatever you choose I know you will enjoy it. Can't wait for your reaction tomorrow 🥰

whichever one I end up going with, I think it would be good to listen to "alternate versions" when possible. For specific scenes, songs etc. Not just English/Japanese, but I could hear some other dubbed languages too.

Animaechan

Definitely dub

Classicxii

That so cool that you start dragon ball i watched the show so many Time when i was a kid. Personnaly i really hate the dub i think they couldn't have done worse

Theodi

In my honest opinion I think db is better in dubbed, that includes Z, the version you probably watched is the American soundtrack dub version. To me that is the best way to experience the show, so many classic lines and music

Antonio Alford

For dragon ball z would be sub but dubs also good it depends how u watch it and same for yugioh I would recommend sub
