the idea is that we still don't know who she is to the Doctor. all we know is that she has known his future self and she knows his REAL name, which to him means she must be someone very important. can't say anymore cos y'know... Spoilers

you're overthinking. This is the first time the Doctor see River, she's supposed to be a mystery for now. The Doctor doesn't know the answer, therefore we don't know either.

It’s not a spoiler if you say Sally Sparrow is one of the best characters introduced on the show and she should have been a companion. The fact that she’s a one-time appearance doesn’t change that. Same goes for River. Just by these 2 episodes alone, she’s pretty high up the list.

Yeah basically what you need to know about River so far is her and the Doctor have some sort of relationship in the Doctor's future but they don't meet each other in the same order as each other, so the first time he meets her from his perspective here is the last time she sees him before she dies. She reveals that this means that every time they meet in the future the Doctor already knows how she will ultimately die in the library and can never tell her. Obviously, there's more in store...

This is two parter is the first appearance of the character River Song in the series. This is the first time the Doctor meets River Song. Like the episode mentioned, this is the last time River Song (this version of the character) will meet the Doctor since she dies in this episode.

Not disappointing at all - this is EXACTLY why noone should have said in the comments last week ‘you’ve just met the best character ever’ - it’s a spoiler and it makes you think you’re missing things that you’re not. This episode is MUCH more enjoyable to watch for me later on once you know the rest of the show, so don’t feel like you missed anything at all! People really need to stop making it clear which characters are important and not in their comments. Let him discover it for himself...

You understood everything in the episode. The identity of River Song is still meant to be a mystery, basically the thing with River is that her and the Doctor meet each other in the wrong order due to timey wimey stuff. That is what the diary is for. All we know is that the Doctor trusts her a lot since she is one of the only person to find out his real name.

You’re just overthinking it. This is a show intended for families and kids, some things can be taken at face value. River is just a character we’ve never met before and is unrelated to anybody we’ve seen. Imagine watching this in real time back in 2008, as far as I knew her story was done, no guarantee she would ever return. What I really like is this being the rare time when the “bad guy” listens to and accepts the doctor’s “deal”. Yeah that was a gut punch. The next few episodes are loaded with them.

(Deleted earlier comments because I watched the reaction and what I said was ENTIRELY unnecessary lol) You didn't miss anything, you just got caught up thinking that you did. We don't know who River is. We're meeting her for the first time just like the Doctor, and he doesn't know who she is either. This episode is just one big tease in that regard. Otherwise a perfectly great reaction.

At this point, all we know about River is that she knew a future version of the Doctor and that future version trusts her enough to tell her his real name. Thats why the Doctor was so shook when she whispered in his ear because he never mentions his name, not even to Rose and they had a strong chemistry. They also try to emphasize that this was the first time the Doctor meets River but the last time she meets him, so a future version of him will meet an older version of her.
