Rory, take Hitler and put him in that cupboard over there. Priceless

TnT_FoX

I believe he thought it up when writing season 6. I'm not even sure he planned on returning Rory until the season 5 finale. They mentioned clues about river in episode 4 of season 6, maybe even before, so it was planned for season 6, however I get your point except Mel is 'programmed' to kill the doctor asap. Wish they had Mel looking at the Doctor and stuff when Amy and Rory left with him, and again, at the wedding with an intent stare foreshadowing, write it off as too many people to strike.

TnT_FoX

This episode made me sad because it was so obvious who Mels was as its this random new best friend from childhood who was no where in the rest of the previous stories nor at the wedding. Makes it seem like Moffat didnt really come up with her being Amy and Rorys daughter until starting to write the hook for this season.

Will fix now! Thanks Karl

I love this episode and the one before. I remember laughing out loud at the end of S6E7 where it said, in big bold letters, something to the effect of The Doctor Will Return in Let's Kill Hitler! What sort of Doctor Who story title is that?! Then we had all that great stuff with poking fun at Hitler, with Rory punching him and locking him in the cupboard - totally living up to the wacky episode title. There's that wonderful moment when you realise who Mels really is, just as she's about to regenerate. It's audacious stuff and it really works for me. Top notch acting all around, especially Smith. The scene where River sacrifices her future lives for the Doctor (she becomes River at that point) is surprisingly moving for me. Also there are many shots where Gillan looks so beautiful in this one (though that's hardly unusual!)

So what were your thoughts on Shazam?

Brodie Vickers

Actually, you said River burning through the rest of her regenerations makes sense as to why she died in the Library two parter instead of regenerating but actually, in that episode The Doctor is planning to sacrifice himself and River says that it'll burn out both his hearts and he wouldn't regenerate, thus River takes his place. So regenerations or not, she'd still die.

The Doctor couldn't regenerate because the poison had infected his entire systems, including the regeneration process, shutting it down.

This episode also really cements that the Silence don't fuck around. Their attempts to kill the Doctor that we've seen thus far: -Hijacking and blowing up a TARDIS and nearly wiping out the universe just to get to him (implied, anyway- I and I think most people certainly assumed it was them by this point with everything else we know, and I personally speculate that their real endgame was creating a situation where the Doctor would be forced to erase himself to save the universe, which he very nearly did until Amy remembered him back to life) -Assemble an entire army just to kill the one guy (last episode) -Send a trained super assassin after him, armed with anti-regenerative weaponry like the lipstick (nearly successful- the anti-regeneration capability was so strong that it took multiple lives from River just to counteract it) -Send the astronaut after him, armed with more anti-regenerative weaponry (apparently actually successful, based on the premiere)

This episode has aged better for me than I remember. Not sure it's the follow up the first part deserved, but it's solid. Wish we'd seen more of psycho young Melody though, she's fun. And the Hitler comedy was great.

Also.. River giving up all of her regenerations in one go.. to save the Doctor. Still a wow for me. S4, she whispers into the Doctors ear and he trusts her from then on. And in this episode the Doctor whispered into her ear, and I would say the same since she gave all that power up to save him. The parallels are fun to pull lol. But I think you can also see how strong their dynamic is after watching this episode especially. It was always there since the first episodes, but with this context it is so much greater, at least i think so.

I love re-watching this story arc in S6, and it's so fun watching your reactions. Alex Kingston is just brilliant as River. We see River in her early start in this episode, and It reminds me of what River said in the S4 two parter about seeing the Doctor when he didn't know who she was - "You know when you see photograph of someone you know, but it's from years before you knew them. It's like their not quite finished, their not done yet." In that episode River saw a younger Doctor who, yes was the Doctor, but hadn't fully grown into his own in a way- to her, since she knows his future. And in this episode the Doctor, Amy and Rory see River in that light. They see River at her beginning, but they know who she will grow into becoming, the River they have known and been with this whole time.

Interesting the doctor couldn’t regenerate. I wonder if that’ll come into play later.

Moffat didn’t create “penny in the air / penny drops”. It’s an actual saying in the UK. It’s pretty old too, it’s been around since at least the 1930’s

For clarification in case you missed it - River was the girl who regenerated in that alleyway in New York at the end of 6x2

Alex James

Eh. We don’t need reactions to every mini-sode

I love River, just love her devilish innuendos and how she manages to a little bit psycho yet classy at the same time - also like that (compared to the rest of the cast) she is an 'older' actress (and very hot at that).

Chris

To be honest this is one of those for me where it's just too Moffat-y. The clever contrived language - eg 'penny's in the air' and the throwing every idea at the wall approach are just too strong in this ep, to the point where everything's emotionally minced and nonsensical. 'Oh by the way dw about ur baby she was ur childhood friend who we've never seen before oh and she's dead and also tiny police and the Third Reich'

When I watch this episode now I don’t mind it but back in the day I thought it was a huge disappointment off the back of episode 7 and I was only 11 years old. But I suppose it’s not too bad if you don’t have to wait months for it like when it aired

James Waters

There is. And to the next episode as well

I think you missed a minisode? I think there's a prologue to this episode.
