Certainly at least in top 5

Ward Junior

One of the best episodes ever

Perfect hiders = Chameleons

Really enjoyed your reaction - agree with many of your points. I really like this episode, but I like it despite its flaws - they definitely threw a bit too much in, but there were some lovely strands of the story that make it worth watching.

Totally agree with your take. Some ingredients for a great episode were there, but it was just too scattered for me. Orson Pink was an unnecessary addition.

I think everyone has said it anyway but, don't worry about the thing in the bed, the doctor knew it was nothing really, he wanted everyone to look away so it felt comfortable leaving the room. Listen was to level timey wimey Moffat at his best

Few interesting things about this episode. 1) While it seems obvious really, it's weird to think that we technically saw the first incarnation of the Doctor again. 2) 'Fear makes companions of us all' is a quote from the first Doctor to Barbara in (part 2?) of 'An Unearthly Child'. C) Similarly, when the Doctor wakes up and says 'Sontarans perverting the course of human history!' is the fourth Doctors first words after regeneration. 4) This episode, I feel, is a good spin on how the Doctor acts after travelling alone for too long. Instead of that 'Time Lord Victorious' angle, we get to see him driven by obsession to the point of taking unnecessary risks to solve this mystery and get an answer. 5. Despite his much more callous exterior, it's great to see that the Doctor is still great with children. 7) Yea, the meeting of Orson Pink, who looks exactly like Danny and all but outright states that Clara is his great-grandmother is a really fucked up spoiler to have in your life....like, it would feel like almost being 'locked in' to a relationship until at least Clara has a child. Like, she has just met her great grandchild but in order for him not to be erased from time she HAS to stay with Danny, regardless of the quality of the relationship. I mean, time can be rewritten and blah blah blah, but I feel that would be something that would play on an ordinary persons mind. 8.) I don't know if you are planning on watching anymore Classic Who, I'm sure at least a few more standout episodes have been recommended, but there is a guy on youtube called 'Clever Dick Films' who has been making reviews of each Doctors era and has just released his 8th Doctor era episode. These are actually really indepth and cover a lot of history of the show, on screen and off, the highs and the lows, gives background and explanations of certain stories and characters etc. They are really well put together, researched and an informative watch.

I think just having the companions be regular people is far better. Like Martha, I liked her because she was a normal woman who was just quite intelligent, although she got kinda shafted in her season as just being the 'not-Rose,' I like when companions are normal and out of their depth at times. New Who often goes to hard on super-special companions or companions who apparently understand everything in the universe based on travelling with the Doctor for, like, 2 years.

Does Marty McFly deserve any credit for Goldie Wilson becoming mayor? Same with Clara. The doctor was always afraid, all Clara did was contextualize the fear. The tardis said it wanted to explore the universe so it stole a time lord and ran away, maybe Clara nudging the doctor to take a different one is the how that happened.

It didn't quite work, I think nipping off to find Orson stole the atmosphere away from the episode. Had they stayed gloomy and gothic and continued investigating then it might have been better. And I totally agree that they made Clara far, far too important in The Doctor's timeline. First choosing a TARDIS for him and now this.

after all those years I'm still not sure if I actually enjoy watching this episode. I love Moffat's writing, he always takes something we know and turns it into a grand story, like he explained dust in sunbeams and turned them into the Vashta Nerada. And he did it here too and I like how left it to us if there is actually something under the bed or if it's only Clara. But sometimes he takes companions and makes them too big. I like Clara a lot and I love the bond she has with Twelve, but I don't think that making her the very reason the Doctor believes in never being cruel or cowardly just a bit... I don't know.. too much? Doctor Who lives from the mistery the Doctor brings and how unmysterious he actually he is when you get to know him but the way Clara got the major part of his timeline again, after being the one who showed him which Tardis to steal... it just doesn't sit right with me.

Although the tension does fall flat a bit, regarding whether there was something there or not, that was the point I think? A suitable explanation was deliberately provided for it to be a ‘monster’ but equally for it not to be in every single situation, the final scene with the door unlocking is the biggest proof of something being there but conversely Clara grabbing the Doctor’s leg provides the biggest proof of there not being anything! Imo it’s an odd choice to lean towards it being nothing however I think in this one Moffat wanted to make the audience really contemplate whether there’s anything there or not without providing an answer, as well as address the negative connotations of being afraid but I just don’t think he succeeded as well as he could’ve (though I still really enjoy the episode). I agree there were one or two ideas too many in the episode, perhaps had Moffat dropped something to provide more time to fully develop the others the end product could’ve been better.

The Kernowyon Penguin

damn actually was just that

The idea was that it was just a normal kid on the bed playing a prank
