Matt was my doctor so this is the best special imo

Bonnie ?

My favourite Christmas Special by a long way. Love it all.

LB2000

There was such a huge hype for this. Big screen screenings and the works. So my hopes for it were already a bit too high. The silliness after the darkness, even with the wait between Hell Bent and the special, was a bit flat, and perhaps if they had kept the Hydroflax story smaller, and the Doctor and River longer, I'd have been happier when it first came out. But on rewatches, I do cherish this one. It hits a personal nerve at the end, so it will be the one I watch the most, regardless with how flat the first half felt and still somewhat feels to me.

I didn't fully appreciate this one when I first saw it. But now I absolutely love it. The more I've rewatched episodes that feature River or Melody and her arch, the greater appreciation I have for the final moments of this episode. When she was first introduced it was very apparent the huge potential that the character had. I suspected that potential would be lost as new ideas hit the writing desk. Because of the years it would take to properly do the concept justice and an aspect of the show being about change every few years or so. The idea of a character that could pop in and out at disjointed intervals was extremely appealing to me. My real concern was that they would do a half arsed job of telling it. Or worse still, totally abandon it all together leaving the character an unexplained loose end or as part of some offscreen resolution in a passing comment one character makes to another. The potential was too great for that. So not in short... I'm love this one. 😁

I loved this ep so much, when it aired I was sooooo shocked and did not expect that ending, but i found it wrapped up he story so well and to relate it back to something that happened over half a decade prior was fantastic and so heart felt.

I thought it was a good send off for River and at the perfect time for the Doctor too. 24 years together is not bad at all. They'll travel the cosmos. Have a few adventures. Her adventures do continue in Big Finish audio adventures. Now if only they could give Jack Harkness the perfect send off. How did he become the face of Boe? The Doctor, River and Jack. There you go. Make it happen.

They even use the music from Forest too. πŸ™‚

Mr K

notice River had a trowel? like her grandfather? and also The Doctor scans her when he gives her the screwdriver?...all ready for forest of the dead. love the tie ins

Marcelo Alguerno

this was written as a comedy and works brilliantly. they got two very famous British comedy people, Greg Davies, the head and Matt Lucas, Nardole.

I think the Christmas specials are always going to suffer with binge watching. We've taken the long way around from a serious series end to Christmas, so a shift in tone isn't going to be so big for us.

I really liked this episode, and it made me sad that we haven't had 12 and River before, because, man, they had some amazing chemistry. I could've watched waaaaaay more episodes with them together.

I think this was an ok episode. Didn't like the first half, but i do appreciate some scenes like the doctor being finally able to "react" to his own tardis for the first time! that made me giggle! and the doctor having a laugh with river was sweet too. The scene where River FINALLY realized the doctor is standing beside her all along was so well done! River's speech, and "Hello Sweetie!" 😍 Overall, it was quite a bittersweet episode for me. And I agree that 12/River had great chemistry! ahhh i just wish we could see more of them though!

if you're gonna watch a Classic who episode in between series (which I hope for because I've enjoyed the last few a lot) I'd recommend the Tenth Planet. It's a very important episode in Who history and it's also very good. Regardless, I'm looking forward to series 10, it's a good one.

Loved this one and actually prefer Peter Capaldi with Alex Kingston.

Mr K

I like how they tie in silence of the library with the screwdriver that the doctor gives her in this and it was a nice wrap up for Riversong.

Didn’t really like the first half of them story, but loved the second part πŸ™Œ

I liked the wonky 1st half just to see 12 having fun. I loved the 2nd half, with all the feels. I watched Silence in the Library after this one, and they fit together beautifully.

This is personally my favorite Christmas special. Not really because of the story per se as it is a bit wonky (it probably feels off because this is a light hearted episode after some dark ones) but mainly because of River and 12's interactions (I agree they have great chemistry). River is my favorite character in the entire series. She loves the Doctor but she also doesn't need the Doctor. She doesn't sit around waiting for him and has her own life and adventures. It's not easy to be in love with the Doctor but she hides her pain so well. And the way she describes what it is like being in love with the Doctor is beatiful. You can also see how much the Doctor cares for her as well and the reason he sometimes avoids seeing her is because eventually it will be the last time. In this episode he kind of accepts it and makes the best out of a bad situation. We have seen River with 10, 11, and 12 now but I think 11 will always be "her" Doctor. The one that she fell in love with and the one that fell in love with her. Knowing what's coming in the library it is heartbreaking. But they also were able to have 24 years in Darillium. Sorry, long post but I really do love this Christmas special ❀ When you get all caught up you should watch a video of River's timeline on youtube. Because they never meet in the correct order it's easy to forget exactly where she is at in her timeline each time they meet.

I really love all of the emotional beats in the ep and the wonderful chemistry between River/12. It is a bit jarring alongside the comedy they were going for in the main plot though so it's a bit of a weird one. I'd agree it's a mid-tier Christmas ep carried by a few fantastic moments.

What'd you'd think about this one? :)
