2020-01-17 21:14:23 +0000 UTCThey talked about this episode a lot in the recent cast + writers panel thing the Vulture did. The idea was to do a clip show, but with all clips the audience had never seen before, which as Dan Harmon pointed out, is the opposite reason why you do a clip show. You do a clip show to save money, this episode cost 2x more than a Community episode typically did. They did shoot almost all those scenes for this episode, minus the animated bits. They apparently had a second unit and shot a lot of the exterior stuff at Universal Studios, so a lot of those locations are actually sets from other movies. Yvette Nicole Brown who plays Shirley said it was difficult because the Universal Studios tour ride kept coming through and they had to stop shooting and wait for it to move on.
