The War Is Over, It’s Time To Go Home (Ea)(Com)

A commission for WildCirno

It had been a very long, hard road for Rune. Her journey through this world hadn’t been easy at times. She’s experienced hardships and heartaches, been beaten and at one point nearly broken, but in the end she never once gave up, and after all her hard work, she finally did it.

Rune had made friends as she traveled the world, eventually getting enough to make a small, yet powerful army. Then, after slaying the seven monsters that supply power to the demonic king, she led her army into the kingdom of Loris to slay the demonic king.

Her army went to battle with his shadow monsters, which ranged from looking like human soldiers to giant monsters. While her army battled his, Rune and her close allies snuck into the castle and confronted the demonic king directly.

It was an intense battle that nearly the whole time seemed like it was going in the demonic king’s favor; however, thanks to one of Rune’s teammates jumping in front of an attack meant for her, Rune was able to end the demonic king by piercing her holy sword through his chest.

With that, the mission she was brought to this world for five years ago was finally complete. Before the demonic king’s body hit the ground, Rune was by her ally, healing them before they could die, and luckily, the wound wasn’t fatal, and they’d be alright after some rest.

After that, the group took a second to catch their breath before Rune walked out onto the castle's balcony. She looked around and the shadow monsters were gone. All that stood now was her army of heroes who had fought for this world and succeeded.

Rune raised her sword into the air and looked around. Then, as loudly as she could, she yelled, letting everyone know that the demonic king had been slain. She then declared the war over and that the world was once again at peace.

The next few hours were filled with celebration and helping the poor people who lived in Loris out of the dungeons and getting them back to their homes. Despite having no more fights left, Rune was already coming up with what she and her army would do next.

She knew it would take a while to truly restore Loris, get it a new ruler and much more, so she was going to have her army work various jobs, from guard duties to helping rebuild what was broken.

However, while she was planning, a friend of hers came into her chambers. It was her fairy friend Kiwi. Rune smiled when she saw Kiwi, then thanked her friend for everything, from bringing her into this world to staying by her side.

Kiwi smiled back and said that it had been her pleasure, and their time together had been some of the happiest of her life. Kiwi then looked a bit sad, and Rune knew right away something was up. Rune asked if Kiwi was leaving now that the war was over.

Kiwi seemed to get even sadder as she shook her head. She said she wasn’t going to leave the people in need, not after working so hard to liberate them. She then looked away for a moment and then looked at Rune.

She then told Rune it was time for her to return to her world. Rune froze for a moment when she heard that. She wasn’t sure she heard that right. She then asked Kiwi if she was serious. Kiwi nodded and said she was.

Kiwi continued by saying that the demonic deity had messed with the fabric of reality, which allowed her to pull Rune here in the first place, but now that it was gone, the balance of the world would soon restore itself, which means it will send Rune home.

Rune jumped up and slammed her fists on the table in front of her. She asked Kiwi if there was anything she could do to stop it, as she didn’t want to go back there. Kiwi shook her head and said she wasn’t strong enough to do such a thing; no one was.

Rune started pacing back and forth, then she started checking some of the ancient spell books she had, saying there had to be something that could keep her here. When she didn’t find anything, she turned towards Kiwi with tears in her eyes and said she didn’t want to go back to being a man.

Kiwi saw the sadness in Rune’s eyes and walked over to her. Kiwi then pulled Rune in close and hugged her tightly. Rune, still crying, hugged Kiwi for what was likely the last time. As they embraced, Kiwi whispered into Rune’s ear.

Kiwi assured Rune that everything would be okay. She told Rune to close her eyes and just trust her. Rune used her hand to wipe her tears. Then she said she trusted Kiwi with her life. She then closed her eyes and sat there hugging Kiwi.

Kiwi began singing, which always put Rune at ease. Rune smiled and rested her head on Kiwi's shoulders and listened to her sing. It was so amazing, but then it was gone. When the singing stopped, Rune opened her eyes.

Rune let out a deep sigh as she looked around the college dorm room that she had been living in before being transported to the other world. It looked exactly the same, with all the clothes she left lying around, the empty food containers, and tons of books.

Clearly she returned back to when she left, which means no time in her world went by without her, but it also meant she went back to her former self. Her old male self, which she had always hated, was no longer the tall, buff and extremely beautiful warrior woman.

Rune stood up, ready to feel completely out of place in her old body, but as she stood up, she noticed she didn’t feel different; she actually felt the same way she did in the other world, which wouldn’t make sense if she was a guy again.

She looked down at herself and let out a loud, happy laugh. She was still wearing the purple camisole that she had worn all the time while in the other world, and tucked away underneath it was a pair of breasts, just like the ones she had in that world as well.

Rune, beyond excited, looked around her room. It had been a while since she’d been here, but she knew she had a mirror in here. So she ran around looking for it and ended up finding it under a sheet, which she had used to cover the mirror before because she hated how she looked as a guy.

Rune tore the sheet off and looked at herself. A huge smile appeared on Rune’s face as she saw and confirmed that she was still a woman, albeit she wasn’t quite the same as she was in the other world.

She looked more like the meager version of Rune the warrior who saved Loris, or perhaps just her shy little sister, who was probably a healer instead of a warrior. She was a bit shorter and definitely much thinner thanks to not having as many muscles from swinging swords around.

Her hair was the same length, but now it was incredibly messy, likely because in this world it was up to her to maintain it, and she was really bad about maintaining it in the other world, which was why Kiwi always brushed it out and put it up for her.

On top of all that, she seemed to be younger as well, which made sense, as she had been living in the other world for five years, and that version of her body had aged with time since she was still human in that world.

Rune started at herself; it was a bit different, but she didn’t care, she loved her new body, and there weren’t words that could express how happy it made her to be in this world and not have to live in it as a man again.

Rune closed her eyes and held her chest. She smiled and thanked Kiwi for this, as she knew Kiwi had to have been the one to make it so she was a girl in this world as well. As she did that, she suddenly felt something in her pocket moving.

Rune opened her eyes and reached into her pocket and pulled it out. She then held it in front of her. The item happened to be a heart-shaped rock, one that Rune had found early on during her adventure when it was just her and Kiwi.

It was glowing, and Rune knew what it meant. Kiwi had heard her. Rune smiled and as the glowing from the rock started to slow down, Rune told Kiwi that she’ll never forget her or the adventures they had together.

She then wished Kiwi and everyone else in that world the best. After that the glowing stopped and Rune knew for sure that was it. The connection between their worlds was gone, and as long as things stay peaceful in that world, they’ll never connect again.

Rune pressed the rock against her chest and smiled. She said that was okay; she was done fighting anyway, and she trusted her allies to do good by that world, so they were in great hands. As for her, it was time for her to get back to her life in this world, and this time, she knew she’d be happy in it.

It's surprising how rarely heroes are truly rewarded for saving the world - not with something that essentially belongs to it anyway (like a way home), not with something ephemeral (like the world's eternal gratitude), not with something useless (like the ability to call on the gods), and not with something meaningless (the loss of all the world's riches) ... Rune was lucky and received as a reward what she really needed.... And I'm also tormented by a question ... Have Rune and Kiwi ever spent the night together?
