Summary: Adora gets tattooed by the hottest woman she has ever seen. She tried so hard to be good and completely missed all the signs that this woman was very interested. Adora tries to stay away, but she can't deny the attraction for long.

--

Catra could not be patient. She was a fool to think she could wait four to six weeks for Adora’s tattoo to heal so she would text her. It had been three days and she had already given up hope that Adora would text her just for funzies. Catra was so sure of herself meeting Adora, she was so cocky that she could get Adora to fall right in her lap. Now? She was questioning everything she ever knew. Maybe she wasn’t smooth at all, maybe she didn’t know anything about flirting.

She sighed for the third time in the last five minutes. She was laid upside down on her couch with her feet on the wall and her head hanging off the cushions. She was even too depressed to nap and that was a tragedy, she had a perfect sunspot right now.

“What are you doing right now?” Lonnie asked suddenly as she peeked over the cubicle wall. Catra was not a fool, she could see the bucket of plaster filler Lonnie was attempting to hold out of view. Catra refused to help fix the holes in the wall, even if it was her own doing. It wasn’t her fault Rogelio brought an injured bird into the shop that turned out to be far less injured than expected. Catra had very helpfully scaled the walls to gently capture the scared feather ball and put it back outside, so she would not be punished with manual labour for her good deeds!

“Super busy,” Catra cut her request with a huff. Lonnie rolled her eyes and looked at Catra critically for a moment. Catra could feel the woman's gaze but refused to acknowledge it when she could glare at the opposite cubicle wall that she shared with Rogelio.

“Are you sulking?” Lonnie asked and Catra scoffed with insult.

“No,”

“Good, come help me,” Lonnie tried again, but Catra flicked her tail in irritation and glared harder at the softly carpeted wall before her. Begging it to catch fire and take her out of this conversation.

“Can’t, I’m busy,” Catra insisted, and Lonnie just rolled her eyes and walked away.

“Told you,” Kyle whispered.

“Fine, you were right, come on, I’ll give you a boost,” Lonnie returned and Catra considered sitting up to watch the show but refused to show any interest in case she was guilted into helping.

Adora woke from her dream with a groan, she could feel herself waking up but she didn’t want to let go of the blissful feeling she was experiencing. Adora had to acknowledge two things immediately, she was awake and her alarm was going off for work. She groaned again and turned it off before she tried to hide in her covers. She was tempted to push her hand under her sleep shorts to try to recapture the feelings but from her previous attempts the last few days she knew it wouldn’t help.

She had been dreaming about Catra, again. Her mind had been nothing but predictable every night since her tattoo as it provided her with dreams of Catra. Her tattoo had already started to heal and the delightful stinging feeling had reduced to a dull ache which left her feeling unsatisfied.

After her tattoo she had returned home to find her apartment empty. Bow and Glimmer had a late class so she had to wait for the hugs she needed. It turned out to be a good thing for her though when she decided to dispel the building energy on her own. She couldn’t remember the last time she came so hard from her own hand. She had spent the whole time thinking of the feeling of the tattoo. When she was done she realised what a weird thing it was for her to get off to. She was ashamed of herself but it didn’t stop her from doing it again after her first dream. The second time wasn’t as satisfying and since then they had only gotten weaker. It was barely worth the energy to just feel more worked up rather than less.

She pushed herself out of bed and had to hurry to get a shower in before Glimmer woke and took up Adora’s timeslot.

Once she was showered and dressed in her all black uniform, Glimmer was just getting up and getting dressed. Apparently skipping the shower this morning, Adora bopped on her heels as she waited for Glimmer in the hallway. They worked the same shift at a cafe at the mall so she didn’t have to drive herself. Glimmer wasn’t one for speed limits either, so she never had to worry about being late.

Glimmer barely spoke before coffee, so Adora knew to keep quiet until they got to work. Glimmer was a bit of a coffee snob and she refused to drink instant coffee at home so the drive to work was always relaxingly quiet.

Adora spent her shift on the coffee machine, and Glimmer worked the register; once she was caffeinated Glimmer was sweet as pie. She always got the best tips and Adora liked the methodical rhythm of making a continual flow of coffee. The most interesting part of Adora’s day was calling out the names and the random times someone would ask if she put her number on the coffee cup. She never understood that, why would she put her number on the cup?

After her shift she had a few hours of free time before she had to go home and study so she went to the gym as another attempt to dispel the growing energy inside her body. She lifted weights for a few hours and despite her body being pleasantly sore she did not feel satisfied. She did get a few compliments on her tattoo which was nice and she explained to each one where she got it and how good Catra was. It didn’t get Catra off her mind but if it helped her business that would make Adora happy.

Adora got home at four thirty to the smell of Bow's cooking. He was an amazing chef that they didn’t deserve. It was best to never trust Adora with cooking because she got distracted so easily. Alternatively Glimmer could not balance flavours to save her life, she was impatient so she always ended up putting too much salt.

Adora came into the kitchen and saw Bow humming to himself wearing his "gosh I love arrows" apron which logically made no sense, but it made him so happy when Glimmer bought it for him.

“Hey Bow, what’s cooking?” Adora asked, putting her bag on the small kitchen table as she moved further into the room.

“Adora” He sang “I'm making beef stroganoff” He said lifting one hand dramatically, and Adora smiled.

“I don’t know what that means but it sounds fancy,” Adora said and Bow laughed.

“It's beef and sour cream gravy,” Bow explained and Adora made a face. “I promise it's good, it's got onions and mushrooms, you love mushrooms,” Bow said and Adora considered this for a moment.

“Ok, fine, I will give it a go, it does smell nice,” Adora permitted and Bow grinned.

“Great, you’ll have to tell me how you like it when I get back,” Bow said and Adora glanced at the family calendar on the fridge to see Bow playing archery tonight with his archery friends.

“I’ll be sure to take notes,” Adora said and Bow grinned.

“You better, I need to know if I can make it again,” He said and Adora shrugged.

“I’m sure it will be fine, I better get to studying,” She said and he nodded.

“Great, I’ll see you later,” he said.

“Later,” Adora said, grabbing an apple to snack on and her backpack from the table to go to her bedroom. She set up her books on her desk and put her sound cancelling headphones on with rain sounds playing and started reading her boring accounting books. She had no idea why she had to learn accounting to run a business, she could just pay someone to do that couldn’t she? It seemed like a waste of time.

She had been studying for about two hours before she had a message light up on her phone. She had it on do not disturb except for Bow and Glimmer so she checked the message.

Glimmer: I served you dinner, want me to bring it in?

Adora: b right out.

Adora marked her place in her book and stretched in her seat before she took off her headphones and went to the kitchen.

Glimmer was sitting on the counter and Adora made a sour face at her.

“No butts on the counter Glim,” Adora reminded her, and Glimmer just shrugged.

“I’m too tired to move,”

“It would have been easier to sit on a chair than get a ladder so you could get on the counter,”

“Excuse you, I got up here on my own. Not all of us are freakishly tall,”

“I’m not that tall, you’re just really short,”

“Your food is now my food, get your own,” Glimmer grumbled and Adora smiled.

“Nooooo,” Adora said dramatically, and Glimmer grinned at her before she handed her the plate.

“I hope for Bows sake you like this one,” Glimmer said and Adora sniffed the food as she got herself a fork.

“He doesn’t have to cook for me, he knows I’m fussy,” Adora said sitting at the table like a normal person. Glimmer rolled her eyes.

“Yeah, but if he didn’t you would only eat noodles or something,”

“Hey, I’m getting better,” Adora pouted before she ate her first bite of the food. It was creamy, mushroomy and beefy. It was perfect. She proceeded to inhale the whole plateful in minutes.

“Yeah, I’d count that as a success,” Glimmer said, trying to wash her plate without getting off the counter. It was a weird angle so she splashed herself with water and reluctantly got up to finish the job.

“That was so good, is there any more?” Adora asked and Glimmer shook her head.

“Sorry, he took the rest to share with his archery team, I’m sure he’ll make it again if you ask.” Adora pouted and nodded as she got up to wash her own plate. As she waited for glimmer to finish, she rubbed her shoulder absentmindedly.

“You good?” Glimmer asked as she stepped away from the sink and dried her hands on a tea towel.

“Yeah, I might have gone a little hard at the gym this afternoon,” Adora said, moving her shoulders and feeling the strain on her right shoulder.

“That sucks, that's why I don’t go to the gym,” Glimmer said and Adora snorted.

“Yeah, sounds safer, too bad I need it for my scholarship,” Adora said and Glimmer sighed dramatically.

“Oh, the woes of having a scholarship for being muscular,”

“It's not for being muscular, it's for rugby,” Adora objected petulantly, and Glimmer grinned. She knew it got under Adora’s skin to ignore her hard earned scholarship.

“My mistake, why did you go so hard today?”

“I dunno, I feel like I haven’t been in a while,” Adora shrugged, trying to hide her real reason.

“I know that's wrong, you went yesterday,” Glimmer said with a suspicious look on her face and Adora blushed.

“That's ages ago, over twenty-four hours ago,”  Adora objected and rushed to distract Glimmer from this line of questioning. “How was the closing shift?” Adora asked and Glimmer's face lit up.

“You will NEVER believe what happened,” Glimmer said quickly and launched into a story about the new barista they are training for another store. She used the wrong glass for the coffee shot and since the glass was for cold water the glass exploded from the heat.

After socialising for twenty minutes Adora returned to her studying, putting her headphones on again and returning to her boring work.

Catra walked into the parlour with a carry tray with four coffees in one hand and the latest UGossip Magazine in her other hand. She was dressed in a cute outfit that made her feel invincible. This armour was almost enough to make her forget her disappointment about Adora but she wasn’t going to think about that today.

“I brought coffee,” she sang, the first Tuesday of the month was her favourite day in all existence. UGossip released a new issue and Catra would spend the next few days calling and texting her mum and aunts to gush about the latest scandals. She was on cloud nine.

“Again? That's like, the fourth time this week,” Lonnie said but took her caramel monstrosity regardless.

“So? I can do nice things for you losers,” Catra defended, fighting the blush that wanted to rise on her cheeks not only from saying something that could be considered sweet but also being called out at the real reason she was doing this.

“Uh huh, nothing to do with Adora working at a cafe and you losing your mind for the last week and a half,” Lonnie said and the truth bomb was like a slap in the face.

“Well, I’m not getting you one next time,” Catra said as Rogelio took his tea with him back to his booth.

“Oh good, I needed a coffee,” Kyle said as he came over to get his and Catra put her magazine on top of his Chai Latte cup and glared at him.

“This is not coffee, you should be ashamed to even say its name in the presence of this flavoured milk,” Catra said and Kyle just laughed like she was joking and took his drink back to his station. Catra was losing her edge, people thought she was funny. This was unacceptable.

Catra sat on her couch and had barely cracked her magazine when she got a text from her aunt to tell her to turn to page fifteen. She giggled with excitement as she drank her black coffee and settled in for a juicy story.

[...]

Adora’s legs were burning after practice on Tuesday afternoon. She had to admit to herself that she had gone to the gym too many times this week and her coach even told her to take it easy for a few days. How was she going to take it easy when every time she closed her eyes she saw a pair of mismatched ones staring at her like she was a meal to be eaten.

Adora’s resolve was wavering. She wanted to see Catra.

She had completely forgotten Catra's number was burning a hole in her wallet if she had any questions. It had been a week since she remembered and she had been racking her brain for something, anything to ask the brunette just to start a conversation. But she came up with nothing except asking her out for ice cream or something. But she was sure Catra didn’t give Adora her work number just to ask such a stupid question.

Adora took longer in the showers and tried to stretch the tightness out of her calves before she got dressed in her street clothes and went to get the train across town.

Tuesday was always a long day, she worked the whole morning then had two hours of classes back to back before two hours of practice and then dinner with her Dad.

It was a lot.

Adora was spacing out on the train as she rode from the first stop all the way to the last stop. She rubbed her tired eyes as she excited the train and walked the few blocks to her childhood home.

The lights were on and the house looked exactly like it did when her mum was alive. Her dad was a secret softy and he hated to change anything from the way Adora’s mum liked it. Adora let herself into the house and could hear her dad out the back in the shed. No doubt working on the boat.

Adora put her bag down on the couch and checked the food on the stove to make sure it wasn’t burning. It all seemed good. Adora had not inherited her cooking skills from her father, that's for sure.

She grabbed a slice of bread and wandered into the backyard towards the shed. She could see her dad cutting wood with his bandsaw and decided to wait until he stopped rather than yelling over the loud machine. She ate her bread as she waited.

“Hey Dad,” Adora said when the saw stopped and the big red headed man looked up at her with a start. He had on black goggles to protect his eyes but he had so much sawdust in his beard it almost looked white. Adora laughed a little as he brushed the wood from his scruffy facial hair and looked around like he hadn’t noticed it was getting dark.

“Hey kiddo, I must have lost track of time,” he said as he lifted his goggles off his face. The dust and grime on his skin made a ring of lighter skin around his eyes like a reverse racoon. Adora smiled at the thought.

“All good, how's the boat going?” Adora asked, hugging her dusty father and he returned the embrace with crushing force.

“Good, good, want to see?” Randor asked and Adora nodded her head with excitement. He loved this thing and there were worse ways of coping with loss than making something you’ve always wanted to make.

Randor spent about thirty minutes talking about the boat in great detail and Adora nodded along even though she didn’t understand what he was talking about. He looked happy, so that's all that mattered really.

“We should get to eating. The food is ready,” Randor said suddenly and they returned into the house as the late summer sun set over the city.

Adora spent some time with her dads, he asked her about her studies and Adora did her best to make it seem like she was enjoying it. They watched some tv and Adora fell asleep for a little while on the couch. She was comfortable and full in a safe space so she could barely keep her eyes open.

Once she woke up, Randor provided dessert and drove Adora back into the city. It was only nine but Adora was exhausted by the time she got home. She chatted to Glimmer and Bow for a few minutes before she took a cold shower and went to bed. It was going to be another hot night.

Wednesday night was the tipping point. She had been so stressed about a paper due at midnight that she cried and submitted something she wasn’t happy with. She felt out of control and it was freaking her out. Her stress had been building with no release in sight and she just needed a break.

On Thursday she got an email in the morning that her afternoon lecture was cancelled because the air conditioning was broken and they couldn’t allow students in the room in the sweltering heat. With an afternoon to herself for once, she knew exactly where she was going and her feet knew the way.

“Damn kitty, who pissed you off?” Huntara asked, sitting in the tattoo chair and Catra glared as she flicked her tail.

“Are you trying to start a fight?” Catra said hitting Huntara’s shoulder with her sketchbook, and Huntara just laughed.

“No, just showing an interest in your life,” Huntara said like it wasn’t incredibly suspicious of her to care.

“What makes you think someone pissed me off?” Catra asked as she cocked her hip and crossed her arms. It was hard to pull off with the sketchbook but it got the message across to not mess with her today.

“Because you are dressed to the nines on a Thursday afternoon,” Huntara said, looking Catra over. Catra decided two weeks was enough mourning for a relationship that was never going to happen and decided to wear her self proclaimed revenge outfit. It consisted of thigh-high leather boots, fishnet stockings, black cut off shorts, a black bustier with a sheer long-sleeved top and a harness around her chest. She knew she looked amazing, which is why she was wearing it. It was enough to make her feel better, but not quell the irritation she felt.

“Are you saying I usually look like shit?” Catra clapped back and Huntara just laughed at her.

“See, you’re the one trying to start a fight,” Huntara shrugged like Catra was not intimidating. Rude.

“I’m just annoyed that you are ruining my week with your stupid face,” Catra said as she grabbed up her stencil out of her sketchbook and reclined the chair without warning. Huntara grunted in surprise but didn’t react like Catra had hoped.

“You love this face Kitty, who else has your tattoos on 70% of their body,” Huntara said with a laugh as Catra looked down at her from above, her curls spilling over her shoulders.

“When you reach 100% then we’ll talk,” Catra snark and Huntara laughed.

“Yo, a client is asking for you,” Lonnie said, leaning on the top of the cubical wall. Catra stood up straight to glare at Lonnie. She was with a client, she couldn’t just leave her to go talk to someone else. Why the hell would Lonnie even ask? She was clearly working with amateurs.

“Can’t you see that I’m busy right now? Tell them to fuck off,” Catra said waving her hand and turning away from Lonnie to dismiss her.

“Whatever, I’ll just tell Adora you said to fuck off” Lonnie said casually and Catra span around so quickly she almost fell off her heels.

“Adora? Adora’s here?” Catra said, her ears perking up in excitement that she couldn’t contain. Was two weeks of radio silence flirting?

“Yeah, but you’re busy,” Lonnie said, already walking away like she would tell Adora to fuck off.

“Wait, shut up! Couldn’t you lead with that?” Catra rushed over to her mirror and checked her reflection quickly. Everything looked on point.

“Be right back,” She said to Huntara as she left the cubicle without explaining further.

“I’m not paying for this!” Huntara called after her.

“Bite me!” Catra sang in response.

“Damn she’s got it bad,” Huntara muttered like Catra couldn’t hear her.

“Ugh, tell me about it,” Lonnie sounded exhausted. She should be happy for Catra! Her friends sucked.

Catra ignored them and went into the front room to see Adora nervously fiddling with the leaf of a plant near the waiting area.

“Hey,” Catra said and Adora jumped, pulling the leaf off the plant.

“Oh no…” Adora said with the level of sadness usually reserved for when someone's dog died. She was so cute. She looked up at Catra with big eyes. “I’m sorry,” Adora said softly, and Catra had to hold in her laugh, instead smiling at the absolutely adorable dork.

“It's plastic, I have a glue gun, no harm done,” Catra said with a shrug and moved closer. Adora nodded and placed the leaf carefully into the pot and stood to face Catra fully. Adora opened her mouth to speak but her baby blues skimmed over Catra’s outfit and her brain provided her mouth with no input.

Catra was very pleased with this reaction and was incredibly happy that she wore her best outfit today. A little part of her wanted Adora to regret not texting her, but the other part was so excited she came at all. Catra returned the gaze, Adora was wearing red bike shorts and a loose muscle shirt that showed off her white and gold sports bra underneath. Adora looked a little flushed from the walk and maybe the heat outside. Their air conditioning had been working its butt off all day.

Adora swallowed audibly as she closed her mouth to try again.

“Hi,” Adora finally said as her cheeks coloured darker than her initial flush and her eyes returned to Catra’s face. Adora rubbed the back of her neck and Catra watched her bicep flex. “Sorry, I don’t have an appointment,” Adora continued.

“All good, I can chat,” Catra lied. Huntara would be fine, she would just give her a discount for making her wait.

“Oh, great! I um, wasn’t sure” Adora continued, she was clearly nervous and Catra really wanted to help her relax and find a way to get her number this time. Usually she would invite a client to her workspace to chat but Huntara’s wide frame was already in her chair.

“Did you want to sit?” Catra asked motioning to the chairs and Adora looked at them for a moment like she was considering it before she shook her head.

“No, I'll just fidget if I sit,” She said with confidence as she wrung her hands together to soothe herself.

“Totally fair, what about a cup of tea? Like peppermint or something?” Catra offered, she wasn’t into tea but Kyle had a huge collection he kept in the communal kitchen that Catra had no concerns about stealing.

“That would be nice,” Adora said smiling shyly and Catra felt like she won the lottery to see that smile. Adora was so pretty Catra wanted to swoon but she was on a mission and swooning would not be sexy.

“Great, come with me,” Catra said and Adora followed her back to the little kitchenette. Catra was very aware of the eyes on them as they passed her cubicle and she flicked on the kettle. She spent some time looking for a cup to ignore the idiots watching them.

She turned back to Adora to see her blushing bright red as she watched Huntara leaning her stupidly big arms on the wall of Catra’s cubicle, watching the blonde. Such a meathead.

“Don’t break my wall,” Catra sniped at Huntara and Adora looked at Catra at the same time Huntara did. Thankfully Adora didn’t see Huntara's thumbs up she sent to Catra. Catra glared at her while her cheeks coloured slightly. Worst client ever.

“Well kitty, I’m going to reschedule. I expect a discount next time,” Huntara said, grabbing her motorbike jacket and helmet off Catra’s table and sliding the jacket on. Adora looked over to watch the woman dress in her protective gear which would absolutely suck in the heat outside.

“Yeah, yeah, you know where to find me,” Catra waved her hand. She only felt a little bad wasting Huntara’s time but she knew the old lesbian was going to tease her mercilessly about this the next time she came in. Not to mention she was going to get inked for so cheap now that she had to give her a discount on top of the one she already gave her first ever regular.

“See you around blondie,” Huntara said as she passed Adora and Adora made a soft noise only Catra could hear, it sounded like a startled whine.

“You know what, you’re banned,” Catra yelled after her, suddenly feeling territorial. Maybe this brick wall of a woman was what Adora was attracted to. If so, Catra had no hope.

“Bite me,” Huntara laughed as she waved her motorbike helmet and left with the jingle of the door bells.

“She seems nice,” Adora said quietly as she looked back at Catra with pink cheeks. Catra rolled her eyes and turned back to the kettle as it clicked.

“She’s not, but she likes big tattoos so I put up with her,” Catra said, making peppermint tea in one of their many mismatched mugs with stupid sayings on them. She didn’t notice she had grabbed her favourite mug which had a +5 to Sarcasm on it.

She turned back to Adora and offered her tea. The blonde took the cup but looked a little lost on what to do next.

Catra motioned for Adora to follow her and sit on the couch in her workspace. A few other clients were here keeping the other snoops busy but Kyle’s booth was right across the walkway from Catra’s and she could hear him listening.

“Take a seat. When you’re ready we can talk,” Catra said sitting on one end of the couch, and Adora took the other. The couch was short so they were barely a foot apart but Catra turned her body to face Adora more fully.

“Ok, thank you,” Adora said as she took a shaky breath and looked around the room. Catra took the opportunity to admire Adora while she wasn’t looking. Catra was in the perfect position to watch Adora’s arm flex as she lifted her tea to sip it.

[...]

Adora didn’t know why she was surprised that this was not going to plan. She had planned to come in and ask Catra if she would like to get coffee sometime, or maybe ice cream.

God it was so hot outside and it was so cool in the parlour. Catra looked even better than she remembered and it felt almost unfair. Her brain just shut down and then Catra was talking and Adora would agree to do anything she wanted if she just kept talking. Her voice was so soothing and the butterflies in her stomach were going crazy.

Adora had been completely distracted by Catra’s tattoos, especially the ones that she could see for the first time in this outfit. She was pretty sure Catra’s other client had seen Adora looking at Catra’s She-ra tattoo on the back of her thigh and Adora almost fainted from the bloodrush to her face.

Catra was being so patient and gentle with her, just like last time and the peppermint tea, despite making her warmer and kinda sweaty, really helped her relax. She took a deep breath, feeling calmer than she had in weeks and looked over at Catra.

Catra was already watching her and a small smile came to her lips as their eyes met. Those eyes were so gorgeous.

“Better?” Catra asked, barely a whisper, and Adora appreciated the softness of her voice at this volume.

“Yeah, sorry about that,” Adora said, feeling a little dazed. She was too embarrassed to follow her initial plan so her overworked brain helpfully provided an alternative route. “Would you like to design another tattoo for me?” Adora asked and Catra looked surprised for a moment before she grinned.

“Yeah, I can definitely do that,” Catra said leaning backwards over the arm of the couch. Her back bent and the planes of her toned stomach stretched. Adora was a little shocked at her easy flexibility. Adora was not flexible, but she was strong. Catra popped upright again holding her sketchbook and her ears wiggled adorably. Adora was completely distracted by them instantly. They looked so soft, she desperately wanted to touch them and find out they were as velvety as Catra’s wrist had felt against her skin.

“What were you thinking?” Catra asked, opening a new page and writing something at the top as she got comfortable.

“Ears” Adora answered dumbly and Catra raised her eyebrow at her. Adora stuttered to correct herself. “I mean. I’m not sure, I think I want something based on my interests,” Adora said feeling a little lost.

She just really wanted to spend more time with Catra so she could build up the courage to ask her out. Adora finished her tea and Catra took it to put on the bench while Adora adjusted to face Catra more fully.

“Great, I’ll get you to tell me about your interests in a second, but first. Since we are making a design I’ll work out a few designs for you and text you options so I’ll need your number,” Catra said, grabbing her phone and smiling at Adora.

“Oh, that makes sense, no rush. Would it be ok if I come in to see them?” she asked, blushing softly as she quickly rattled off her number and Catra typed it into her phone.

“Of course, I'll text you when they are ready then,” Catra agreed quickly and Adora checked her phone.

Unknown Number: Hey Adora ;)
