Breeders - October Dev-Log

Note: some update on Breed Laboratory: The game is almost complete but no release date is set yet. Some tweaking still needs to be done and some creatures for the gallery are still missing.

The current idea is to try to set Blab on Steam, generate some Wishlists for about a month and then release. Still waiting for Steam approval or disapproval, there is some back and forth at the moment which takes quite some time.

It’s time for the first Breeders Dev-Log after the initial release of the proof-of-concept demo.

Development resumed at the beginning of this month, so let’s talk about what’s been done in the past couple of weeks.

Before that, here’s a bit about the general dev-update policy: While the dev-logs themselves will always be public, the idea is to provide supporters with the most recent playable game build with every monthly dev-update.

Since some updates might focus on mechanical changes without new content, it will be mentioned at the beginning of each dev-log if the game build includes additional content or not.

Generally, the monthly supporter builds are for those interested in testing out the latest changes early on and giving feedback. Once a game build reaches a threshold of “enough” additional content, it will be made public for everyone.

In summary: Public builds will always have new content which are as polished as possible but it might take a while until one is released, while supporter builds are meant for those who want to test everything as early as possible.

Save-Load System: One of the more complex features to implement, the save-load system is essential to set up early on. Most of the time this month was dedicated to getting it right. Although it took longer than estimated due to an initial failed attempt, a save-load system with a support for multiple save files is now set. You can try it out by saving the game inside the locked room in Luci's apartment.

 Luci Facelift and Body Adjustments: The biggest critique of the proof-of-concept demo was Luci’s appearance. So, some adjustments has been made: her head is now slightly smaller, and its shape has been refined. Her body has also received minor tweaks. Please share any feedback on her updated look, as it will be more challenging to change her appearance later. Each change to her proportions has a ripple effect on things like clothing and animations, so now is the best time to finalize her look.

Battle-System Damage Number Popups: You can now see the damage dealt during battles. Further adjustments are still needed.

 

Visuals: Ambient Occlusion (shadow lines on objects) has been added to improve the environment’s appearance.
