3.19 - Keagster Preview

You wondered in a ramble on the overtime blog about other kinds of storytelling, and I hope to god you don't try to "fit" your stories to modern (patriarchal) tropes about how storytelling is supposed to work. One of the things that inspires me about Check Please, and takes me to "Oh, that's cute" to "oh my god, this is IMPORTANT" is that the storytelling is SO different, and yet works anyway. And it's not just subverted tropes (though god knows you do that often enough), but a seemingly frank refusal to base the tension in your stories on the 'cheats" that most mainstream serial media rely on. The tension you find feels real, and honest, and isn't based on making people behave in out of character ways. Your stories are some of the most intelligent pieces of fiction I've seen in recent years, and have influenced how I approach storytelling in my own works. Which is an elaborate way of saying, not, "don't change", but "Please, don't try to conform." Because the uniqueness of your storytelling is part of what makes it special, and valuable to me, a nonbinary person, on a personal level.

This was adorbs! But also, um, theory? I think Jack's line about not posting things on social media might have been foreshadowing? Like, Tater interpreted it as not letting people know they were there so that they don't get mobbed, but what if it's because Zimbits might be in the background of something (like, a reflection in the window, off to the side, etc)? And Tater's pics accidentally out them? Horrible theory, feel free to hate me.

omg bitty just seems so disappointed in himself for getting carried away with the jam. So how many times has Bitty over cooked/made/"Got in the Zone"? Because I kinda wanna know what else he's gone overboard with, and if he wasn't around all these hockey boys how did he get rid of all the excess food? :P

Okay, but I need to know... did Ransom scream a shrill, child-like shriek before running and hiding? Did he squeak like a startled mouse, despite being a great big hockey boy? Because great big hockey boy squeaking and running away is my mood for 2017.

There's so much goodness! There's jam war hints, and frog names, and Ransom's love of Tater. There's intense jam ordering and Lardo as the reigning beer pong goddess. I'm so happy.

Also: Wow that couch is looking GROSS. Also also: Who's the dude in a suit in the picture with Tater and Lardo?

There's a problem with Jack's Falconers Tshirt in that image where's in leaning on the doorframe!! Otherwise, it's amazing, and I think Ransom shouting "BYE TATER!" from his room is the most hilarious thing you've ever written.
