Developing Check, Please! Characters (Part 2)

Thank you for doing this! I loved listening to your insights about the Check Please characters. I'm so glad you can do this now, since the story is essentially done ... just a matter of posting chapter updates. There's so much joy in your voice when you talk about them!

Yeah, there's still a lot of Penguins stuff zipping around Tumblr, but back around year 2/3 of Check Please was the midst of the Pen's crazy back to back Stanley Cup runs, so I think as a newer fan to the Pens, I was really spoiled when it came to Tumblr content haha. One thing I wanted to add was that I feel like the way i came into hockey fandom via Check Please, RPF and Tumblr gifs makes me see hockey in a somewhat different way than most "Traditional" hockey fans, as I feel a lot more connected to individual players than the team as a whole entity? So the Pens players that were on the team when I came into the game would probably always hold some level of special significance for me, even after they leave the team (I also now have particular favourites on other teams, even though I don't pay much attention to the rest of their team lol). As for a favourite Penguin? That's a really tough question, cos I love so many of them. There is a core group of about four or five that I tend to choose as 'faves', but if I had to pick only one? Probably Evgeni Malkin. (Also pardon the very long response, lol).

Renny! Hello! (I DO remember the GoProVideos.) Wow it's really interesting how the process went in reverse for you? I know that's been the case for many folks, but it's cool to hear your specific experience. Back in the day (and I imagine still TO this day) the Penguins really energized hockey fandom on Tumblr! I remember all of the gif sets and videos that were being shared and the excitement around this high-achieving but lovable team?...I wanted to bring that to the Falcs, definitely. Like, it's a magical feeling to fall in love with an entire NHL Roster. Thank you for the comment! (Do you have a favorite Penguin, I wonder?)

I love hearing you talk about your characters, and the players who formed part (or more than part) of their inspiration. It's a kinda strange/reverse of how I got into being interested in Hockey, which was via Check Please, which somehow led to me reading some RPF, then watching videos of Sid skating (Do you remember those GoPro Videos?), and then falling in love with just about the all of the players of the Pittsburgh Penguins. I also really, really love Tater as a character, he seems a lot of fun, yet not too much (So indeed the perfect amount of Geno + Ovi).
