Comic 4.13 - "Coach IV" Preview

I love this update! I also love this new format. It's nice to have two or three panels together, and then advance to the next group. That being said, I was reading it on my laptop. It's the best way to enjoy your art.

Something I thought was pretty important-- Coach and Bitty have this conversation after Bitty's team loses a game. Bitty seems to try and make up his lack of masculinity to his father by being good at sports-- see, Dad, I can be tough, too! So having lost a game, a home game at that- Bitty was maybe already feeling like a let down without all this extra coming out drama. When we see Coach support him this time, we know it's not just because Bitty is fulfilling his Manliness Quota™ by being a good sports son, but because he loves him and is proud of him as a rounded human being. Neat!

I was screaming internally! this was so sweet, and I love their faces!!! You can really see how they're in their mannerisms.

NGOZI!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t even have words!!!!!!! I’m elated but it also feels so TRUE of coach. Of course there wasn’t a poetic, heart felt apology- it’s coach! But he and Bitty both knew what he was saying with that and it was wonderful and clearly what they both needed. Also, I can’t believe you managed to actually put the “eeehyup” sound into writing 😂 the talent!!

Totally gonna pretend I didn’t just burst into 3 years worth of tears!! Stunning and fulfilling as always! Also, as a southerner with a southern mom...the Deep End is real...no one knows if it truly has a floor...RIP Coach

Awww, I really like how it's obvious that they're trying, and that whatever awkwardness is there is due to years of not really being able to/knowing how to communicate rather than Coach being disappointed in Bitty. I also love that Bitty gets, like, three seconds to relax before realizing this means Jack is going to have to spend an extended amount of time with his family.

I love the gallery function! Way easier to read on mobile (and it worked perfectly for me). Also I love Coach’s face on the fourth panel lmao that is an expression I have absolutely seen on my own father when my mom decides she needs to host someone or something 😂

Let's watch as bitty has approximately 20 seconds of peace before discovering something new to stress about 😂😂

Ah!!! I loved it! It felt like a satisfying conclusion with Coach, he didn’t suddenly get perfect at being an Ally, but he was putting in much more effort and using his words!!! And that moment of ‘oh no Parent-BF meeting’ for Bitty was so perfect!

Oh wow after that last pannel I just got tears in my eyes, and I didn't see it coming! Awesome. I really hope we see some of Jack at Christmas ;)

Like you said on tumblr, Coach doesn’t have the words to express himself. I do wonder what the conversation between bitty’s mom and dad was like to get him to that point.. anyways, great job. I literally just got into Check Please (friend’s recommendation) and it has made such a big impact on me 🤭😭.

AHHHHH that HUG it's so good!! I'm so proud of Coach!! And so proud of Bitty!!!! It's such a small thing, but that's really all they needed, was this conversation - and the hardest part is just getting up the courage to do it. Then it's done and you wonder, gosh, why was that so difficult?? It's the anxiety of making yourself vulnerable to someone, even if it's something that can't hurt you, even if it's just to your son. Or maybe especially! Feelings are complicated, y'all... Good for them!!! PS I very much appreciate the new gallery function, much easier to read and I like being able to really see the backgrounds!
