Had a lot of conversations with liberals during the last few weeks where they wonder if Russian people will "rise up" against Putin, but don't think through the implications of this or what might be required for people to challenge a dictator. It seems to be simultaneously based on the idea of a strongman being required for authoritarian systems, but also squeamishness about crowds and the possibility they can be whipped up by these authoritarians - whether Putin, or even a Trump or Johnson. Is this a bad way of thinking about this, and if so, how should we be thinking about it?

What does Russia stand to gain from invading Ukraine? I’m having a hard time identifying this in all of the press coverage. Even if the invasion ends up being successful, then what? The sanctions probably won’t end, right?
